MODPlug Central

MODPlug Central is where you'll find Olivier Lapicque's MODPlug Player, definitely the best Win 95-98 player for .IT files - including those with sample compression - and probably every other mod file type. There is also MODPlug itself, which is a plug-in that allows you to play mods from web pages. Olivier also has MODPlug Tracker, the first real full-featured tracker for Windows 95-98, which is getting better all the time. MODPlug Tracker supports the same formats as his players and also saves to .MP3 format.

WinAmp plays everything, of course. Better than most players for MP3s and even Windows Media Player formats. Some IT and XM files may sound best on more specific mod players. Still free, but don't be swayed by their anti-Microsoft stance: WinAmp sold out to AOL, yuh know. Trust No One!

Aminet at http://ftp.wustl.edu - The grandfather of all mod sites. Mods here are stored as .LHA files.
The Hornet Archive was the first fileserver for the PC demo scene, and it's still there. Doesn't accept any new files now, so if you uploaded to them before 1998, you're fixed in history forever, man! Dig it!
The Mod Archive - An admittedly huge, but minimally-organized collection. Archives here are missing the traditional text files that identify the year, author, group, etc., in favor of reviews or online links to info. Not much help for downloaded mods without credits in the header. They are given long filenames that include the type of mod, but this may prevent them from being played on DOS-based systems. How about file dates for us long-time collectors, eh guys? Nothing worse than downloading 20 "new uploads" just to find out they are from 1992!
A collection of digital music (S3M, XM, IT, MOD) by composers from around the world.
